Moments
I keep hearing things that I think are worth more than just setting aside and forgetting about, although that's always what I do. If I record them, maybe they'll linger.
- A man in a wheelchair lives in Chicago, with an upstairs neighbor so disruptive that he has to sleep in his car, where he keeps getting tickets from cops. The landlord does nothing. The housing authority tells him to move, then does nothing. When confronted, the neighbor keys his car. The attorney hasn't called him back since November last year, but he doesn't know what else to do. January?/15
- A woman calls to set up a trust for herself and her husband. "He's very sick, and going in for chemo, and I'm not feeling well either." Calls to make when you see the end. 4/6/15
- She had already set up a trust, and her husband recently died. "I am becoming very aware that when you become 87 years old, sometimes you die." 4/8/15
- She hit someone on the side of the road and didn't stop. She doesn't know what she should do. 4/15/15
- The manager is forcing him to buy things for him to keep his job, he's gone into debt. He's trying to support his family, in Africa. This job is very important to him, but every day he goes in and feels like it will be his last day. 4/28/15
- A woman was laughing as I answered, and I fell in love. What a gorgeous laugh! She had a very nice voice, too. Miss Mayes! 4/29/15
- A woman's daughter is mentally unwell and self harming, she just wants to have her committed. She cried, and thanked me for caring. 5/16/15
- Betty has my grandma's name AND my birthday! We bonded. She used to be a cop, and can guess people's ages by their voice (put me at 20 or 25, she's 67). She hasn't been able to sleep for the last 4 nights without her medication. 12/3/15
- Someone else who works with phones all day hung up on VM, called back, got me again, and asked if I was a machine; confessed she hadn't been able to tell. We had a great laugh over how tricky that can be. 2/25/16
- She's from India and has no family here; her ex-husband knows that and is bullying and harassing her. She works three jobs to support her two kids, and just wants these divorce issues to be done. I hope I was able to help. 4/28/16
- She was enlisted in '75; at the VA office they asked if she had ever been sexually assaulted. She said no, and he didn't believe her. He said that her eyes narrowed and she looked away and to the left, and got defensive. I thought it was odd how specifically she remembered all the reasons he told her she was lying. I also thought they were very convincing. She went through the same conversation with a worker who asked if she had thought about suicide, and asked her how she would do it. When she said a gun or a knife is too messy and she would probably use pills, the woman accused her of having thought about it. I trusted her more here, that she had not really thought about it. Partway into the talk she started telling me that sexual assault is just something you put up with, it's not like you can do anything about it, you just wait for it to be over and then forget about it with alcohol, and she's 60 now and it was so long ago, she never even thinks about it. She told me that as a black woman enlisted she was the bottom of the chain, she was a nobody. I could almost see her in uniform from her words. I don't think it was long enough ago. 10/14/16
- She was only able to come up with $200 of her son's bail, not the $678 that was needed. It was all she had, she said she tried everything to get more. She tearfully told me she was going to go down to the jail and pay that today, if it would help. 1/10/17
- Aaron has got his shit together. He owes a massive amount of back payments on child support for a child he has full custody of; he's a single dad making it work, but just barely. He wants a bankruptcy attorney to get him back to 0, and he can handle it from there. He just got a promotion at work. You've got this, Aaron. 4/18/17

fuckin dragons man
V1
V2
Things to work out:
• Why is he there? What's the illness, what happened to family/village? Is it genetic? A curse?
• Side quests! People/things claim they know the cure and will help if helped in turn, but turn out to be marginally useful/not useful at all.
A dragon and her somewhat incompetent rider that she doesn't like much. They trade jobs that no one wants to do and cheat each other out of stuff constantly, and when a new threat appears they always have to book it— even if it does inspire a little tiny bit of working together in the process. They run into a white dragon who, despite being smaller and less powerful, is simply not taking any of their bullshit because they're so unimpressive together. Whitey fetches her tribe of minotaurs, and they drive off black and rider.
She's with him just because she's not sure where else to go, but she plans on ditching all this for the first big, strong, dreamy human warrior with an army she can fight at the head of. He insists he was the general of an army, it's just back this way, but she believes that if he's not outright lying, it's just a band of like 20 mercenaries.
She's also very young, maybe hatched in his company and grew to nearly fullsize in a few short weeks (ala Temeraire, learning is done in the shell), so she sticks with him because she has a lot to learn about the world, and it's better to have someone not actively trying to kill you teaching you about it. Still needs to learn shapechanging, will immediately begin to rub that in his face when she does. Calls her "Dagger", which she isn't fond of.
V2
V is quiet, insightful, bookish, but cunning. He's secluded himself in the mountains, where K basically just falls into his lap shortly after hatching. He feeds her and she scampers off (hurt or some shit), but keeps coming back for food. "nowhere else to go?" and "no parents?" yields no results.
He eventually helps her learn to hunt, then learn to fly, and much later learn to harness her natural ability to shapechange, but he can't help her learn about other dragons or see the world (though he has a thousand stories to tell about it). She knows she's supposed to be great, and after hearing about big famous battles/armies from him, dreams of being at the head of one. He can see she has an ambitious and cruel nature, but slowly comes to think he can change that/it would be worth it to.
It comes out that he's secluded himself in the mountains to weaken and die (incurable sickness), but she's not down with that. She's just selfish enough not to leave the choice of how he dies in his hands, and so leaves and drags him along with to find a cure. This is actually a plan of his, as he claims he's heard of the cure, but knows there isn't any. It's meant to teach her his final life lessons and get her out to see the world. (End result option 1: They get to the end of the fake-quest and oh look no cure, he dies. Option 2: They unexpectedly do find a cure, and his machinations fall apart and she realizes it was all a fake/she was led on. For her to be pissy about it she would have had to just sacrificed something big for this quest...)
Come to a small village, delayed for something? (Pharmacist making necessary drugs or something.) While there she learns about acting human and meets D, a good guy (knight?) passing through who is terribly opposed to her dickhole ways. They meet on a good note, but their relationship begins to quickly sour (starting when he rejects her advances), becomes a multiple-encounter grudge over their travels. He rises through the ranks of knights into leadership position, as she grows bigger still/learns more spells/etc.

His feet dangled 25 feet above the ground, and netting pressed into his face. Next to him, Ganymede was tapping out a rhythm on its 36th repeat against his rucksack. Or 52nd, possibly. Sponde had lost count somewhere near the twelfth repetition. He was getting hungry.
"Does anyone know what day it is?" A voice from right and underneath of Sponde broke the silence that had stretched for the last three hours. For a moment, no one answered. Even before they'd been left dangling above the ground for nearly a full day, dates had begun to lose their meaning. Discovering a nation of peoples with no concept of a calendar will do that.
"Wednesday?" someone ventured, and someone else echoed agreement. "No, I think it's Friday," voiced another, and there were a few more mumbles.
"It's Monday," Sponde announced, dour and solemn.
"How do you know?" asked Ganymede, finally pausing that rhythm of his.
"I could never get the hang of Mondays."
